Hi,

We live near the Pata department store and have regular visits by Monocoled cobras. We have a huge dissused area behind our house where the previous owners moved out almost 30 years ago when the area started to develop and they do nothing to tend to the area  . It's like its own mini jungle (quite large) We always had reticulated pythions come through, but ive never seen  acobra in our garden for more than 12 years of living there. I dont understand why they have just appeared now. We have caught about seven during the year and hope that this will slow down any breeding of new ones . Its quite scary as we have children. Although most the ones Iv'e encounterd seem quite docile i still dont want ayone to get bitten. I have  avideo of the last one we caught and I'll try and upload it if I can. Checked vajilla hospital the other day ( near krungton bridge) to see if they had anti venom. They said yes , but this is Thailand so you never know, lets hope i dont need any.

Hi David,

Thanks for writing about this. Seems when you see one cobra – monocled (Naja kouthia) especially – you see the whole family.

Antivenin is not a cure… it's a possible cure. You'll still have necrosis at the bite site and lose tissue as a minimum, a finger or foot is more like it with a decent bite. The antivenin is more dangerous than the venom if you're allergic to it!

The first bite is always the worst – and a bad time to find out you're allergic to the antivenin.

Please don't catch them or handle them if you're not trained. You didn't mention whether you have had years of experience handling deadly snakes.

Take care there!

Cheers,

Vern

Hi,

Yes unfortunately Ive never handled snakes and my wife has a number of some service where a guy comes and catches them for us. As for the Antivenin, surely it needs to be administered?? . I don't want to cause anymore damage but a bite from one of these could be fatal if no Antivenin is administered right? Like I say my main concern is my daughter lets hope it doesn't come to that anyway.

Cheers,

Dave
