Funny seeing this today upon entering one of the cages.

Can you identify what it is around the lamp shade?

First impression would be magrove cat snake. Not very dangerous. Yellow stripes are narrower than a krait should have.

What I have now seen twice during few weeks, are some nice cobras. Two of them were very long, around 1,8 – 2,5 meters. Not so often that big, I would say, but now seen already twice. First time with motorcycle and no camera, second time also motorcycle, wife had a camera, but it took too long to get it ready. Then I did not get a permission to go after that snake. Maybe better that way. My wife has seen both and she also says that so big cobras are very rare. She also says that it brings very good luck, because if you meet a cobra as big as those, and live. you must have good luck. I would also say that those snakes we quite thick, 5-6 cm and dark black. Not so close that I could see stripes, but possible. Both places were near rice fields. What else it could be, if not a cobra. If cobra, I would say that —- cobra.

1st was on the road where saw on smaller cobra and over dozen dead one during 3 km drive. 2nd in this week was between a lake and rice fields, not very habiteted area, but some. That was a little bit strange to see so big snake so near.

I would also post a question related to snakes and their hunting.

We have floor drains where is a loose cover. Some small rats have come in through those drains and I am going to fix those. Meanwhile I would like to know if a snake hunting a rat could follow it through drain? Is it possible or is there a reason why not. I remember that in Bangkok water forced snakes to look dry place from homes through drains.

Yep, the mangrove cat snake – somewhat venomous, but I've seen guys get bitten daily – and multiple times – with no real nasty effects. Some get headaches. I've never seen one latch down for more than a few seconds – blow on the face and the snake loosens up most times.

The cobras are interesting. Is there a cobra other than the —- cobra that gets over 2 meters? I've not seen one bigger than about 1.5 meters. Were the bigger ones kings you think?

Snakes coming up drains…

Yes, sure, they can come right up the drains and often they do.

Thanks for your comment – have a good weekend.
